Garden Bed 4 and 5 with the Vertical Garden in happier and healthier times – 7/21/16

My grandparents and parents always had a garden.  These gardens, however, where patches of lawn where they removed the grass and rototilled the thin layer of dirt underneath.  In the spring, these patches of dirt had great potential, but weeds overran and choked out the seedlings shortly after these gardens were planted.  I often had to go out and weed, and I always felt it was punishment.  Needless to say, it wasn’t a great start to my gardening experience, and frankly I hated it.

Fast forward to 2009.  That year, our neighbor grew so much food in her garden that she couldn’t eat it all.  Julie and I found out that she was using Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Garden Method.  We then built our first square foot gardens.  We grew a lot of food in two 4’x4′ gardens, and I went about expanding the garden immediately.  Since that first garden, I have tried a number of different techniques including the following:

  • Square Foot Gardens
  • Mittleider Garden Method
  • Raised Bed Gardens
  • Rain Gutter Grow Systems
  • Vertical Gardens
  • Wicking Bed Gardens
  • Guerilla Gardens
  • Standard plot gardens (Victory Gardens)

Through my successes and failures, I have learned that the only way to see if something really works is to try it, and I learn the best lessons learned from my failures.
