Midweek Motivation is a weekly episode featuring the wisdom and stories of host Tommy Cakes. This episode is all about taking a break by turning off social media and getting away from the noise. Gary Vee recently said that the cell phone is the remote control of today’s society, and your activity on Social Media is nothing more than the reality shows of our current year. Why not turn off social media, put the cell phone away and enjoy people and nature instead?

Hey, how are you? I am Tommy Cakes. Who am I? I’m a guy from someplace, friends with some people and doing some things. Don’t worry about it!
What I can tell you is that I am in the import and export business.

- I export that information at premium prices!
I will give you a little coastal cosmopolitan insight and motivation weekly on Small Scale Life.
It has been a while since we have had a Midweek Motivation. I must apologize from the bottom of my big heart. The boss has kept me running doing this and that, and sometimes it is tough to find time to squeeze this segment in during a busy week. If you want to help me produce this show by providing some topics for discuss, please let me know. It has worked out really, really good in the past, and I can always use a little Motivation topic from you, my favorite fans.
Send your suggestions to realsmallscalelife at gmail dot com or on the Contact Us page on the Small Scale Life Blog. After all, we are going to turn off our social media, put down our phones and walk away, right?
Story Time – It’s All News To Me
The big news this week is that the Boy Scouts are changing their name and allowing women into the Troops. While most did not pay much attention to this story, it did set off a raging wildfire of controversy in some corners of Facebook and Social Media. It seemed that everyone had an opinion, even though many of those people had limited or no experience in Scouting whatsoever. Funny how that is: the Cult of Personality and other people who have little or no experience in something are suddenly trying to teach a subject like they are some kind of experts. Sounds like some Texas guy’s Flowhive Aquapoic Permaculture Project to me! Doh!
Controversies like these really don’t matter in the long run. Lord knows I am guilty of getting sucked into them at times, and getting involved chews up your most valuable resource: your time.
While it is easy to get caught up in the action, you really need to turn off social media and walk away from it all. As my friend Greg Burns told me today:
“I was away from the phone most of the day yesterday grafting trees and enjoying getting sunburned. It’s hard to really explain, but I cannot connect with my work outdoors if I feel like I’m tied down to responding to my phone. It’s weird, but man, take the phone away and the world is beautiful.
I stopped to smell the apple blossoms. That real life sensory moment spoke to me in way social media can’t, and I like it….
Life is getting shorter every day. I am thinking it’s time to roll up my sleeves, put Facebook away and get busy!” ~ Captain Lumbersquatch Greg Burns
Midweek Motivation Lesson: Turn Off Social Media
Here’s the bottom line from all of this and your Midweek Motivation:
Life is busy and chaotic these days. We barely have time to fit our family, our friends, our health and nature into our disjointed lives. Drama on Social Media chews up the most valuable limited resource you have: your time.
Put your phone down and turn off social media this weekend. Be a rebel. Break your habit. Enjoy nature and the people around you. Do something productive, and let the online trolls waste some other person’s time and efforts. Do it this weekend: turn off social media. It might change your perspective and life.
That’s all I got this week. This is Tommy Cakes, and I’ll see you next week! Time to get a drink and head back to the lounge. Bada boom, bada bing!
